The Department of Mathematics congratulates Emeritus Prof Louis CHEN , Founding Director of NUS’ Institute for Mathematical Sciences (IMS) on being conferred the NUS Distinguished Alumni Service Award 2017 for his service to NUS and contributions to the advancement of science. He built up IMS into one of the finest institutes in the world. His research on the Chen-Stein method has grown into one of the most important areas of discrete probability. During his 43 years with the University, Prof CHEN was Head of the Department of Mathematics (July 1996-June 2000) and Head of the Department of Statistics and Applied Probability (July 2002-June 2004). In July 2000, he became the founding Director of IMS, where he served for 12½ years
